The Practical Statistician: Simplified Handbook of Statistics
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (December, 1997)
Authors: Marigold Linton and Phillip S. Jr. Gallo
Average review score:

Great for any undergrad wary of statistics in Psychology
I am terrified of statistics. It's a deep-routed fear that, prior to this book, I had not been able to overcome. This book, though, and I say this quite seriously, has helped me learn to appreciate the stats aspect of Psychology. The book is written in easy to understand language, and it even offers step-by-step guides from some of the more common statistical procedures. Whether you have a knack for statistics or not, this book should be useful. It may be out of print, but every Psych student, undergrad or grad, should try and get a copy of this book.

A Practical Step-By-Step Guide to Indoor Gardening
Published in Hardcover by Whitecap Books (March, 1998)
Authors: Sue Phillips and Whitecap Books
Average review score:

Indoor Gardening
This is a great book for the novice and good for the intermediate grower. It is in a large format with a lot of pictures. As the name says, it is a step by step guide to indoor gardening. . I would consider myself and intermediate grower (I can spot diease and pests and can start a plant from seed and I rarely loose a plant) and I found this book helpful.

It walks the beginner through choosing a health plant. It also discusses types of pots and how to use them and soil mixtures and how to use them. It has a discussions on light and how to use it effectively, how to water properly, feeding (and topdressing), grooming, pests and many more topics. It has a very nice section on herbs. It shows how to grow your herbs inside from seed. It also has a nice bit on drying & freezing your fresh herbs. There is a section on the sunroom garden, growing orchids and bonsai. It is a good introduction to orchids and bonsai, but the serious planter will want to buy a book entirely on the subject or even take a hands on course from a local greenhouse. And there is the section called Houseplant Selections, which is a pictorial of the most popular houseplant. It is a good starting point for identifying your plants. This book won't hold any surprises for the experienced person, but as with all books, you are bound to find some tid-bit that you didn't know.

The Prayer of Saint Francis: A Message of Peace for the World Today
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (February, 2001)
Authors: Leonardo Boff and Phillip Berryman
Average review score:

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Boff's The Prayer of St Francis is truly, as its subtitle suggests, A Message of Peace for the World Today. He enthusiastically sounds the message, line by line, as a call to action. Each sentence bursts with energy and presents a challenge for us to live not only for ourselves but in communion, in solidarity with one another. Boff has reformulated Franciscan ideals into a twenty-first century context. He challenges world order, global economics, consumerism, and wasteful productivity. If I didn't know who wrote this book, I would suspect a consortum that would include Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Peter Mathiessen, Thomas Merton, Mother Teresa, and Ralph Nader.

Two additional lines appear in this Prayer for Peace: "where there is discord, union" and "where there is error, truth". They do not appear in the traditional prayer, but belong there along with Boff's good counsel. This ecumenical message should be read by every political and religious leader and even those of us who lack the motivation to make a difference in our world. Boff's commentary enlightens and inspires us to be instruments of peace.

Beautiful from start to finish
The author holds the payer in the most radient light possible. This message, while written long ago, still holds true today. And the author gives us that message in today's terms. Very well written, have read it twice.

Prayers for Penitents
Published in Hardcover by Church Publishing (July, 2002)
Author: Jennifer M. Phillips
Average review score:

One of the best on my bookshelf!
In my chaplaincy work I draw from a wide variety of prayer resources. I ran across this little book recently, and it has actually spent very little time ON my bookshelf...it's spent most of the time in my coat pocket, being used daily in my work and personal prayer life. The prayers are simple but very substantial and *very* much to the point. This one is a "must" for anyone who prays, I think.

Average review score:

Precalculus
This book is a must-have for the professor of mathematics. My Dad, Joe Sharp, and my uncle Jack Sharp, with their Auburn buddy Phillip Bean worked for years and years on this book, and their effort, as the reader will see, was very much worth the time they spent.

Predators in Our Pulpits: A Compelling Call to Follow Christ With Unswerving Sacrifice

Author: W. Phillip Keller

Predators In The Pulpits
This out-of-print book carries great admonition for the Christian to be alert
as to who you are following. This is of utmost importance. We must have the light of the Word shining unto our paths to see where we are walking--especially in these end-time days. I was so pleased to add this book to my collection of W Phillip Kellers' writings, which I plan to complete.

The Presidency Then and Now
Published in Textbook Binding by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (09 February, 2000)
Author: Phillip G. Henderson
Average review score:

Inside the Oval Office
The presidency has gone through a dramatic transformation since the days of George Washington. The journey thus far has been bumpy and quite rigorous, altering the lives of many Americans along the way. In this book, Professor Henderson offers a fresh and unique perspective on the men who have and continue to mold and shape the presidency. Comprised of a collection of works by numerous political scholars, The Presidency Then and Now presents the most compressive examination to date of the office that so many Americans are affected by. Beginning with George Washington, the reader is propelled into a political journey throughout time, engaging not only the most prominent and influential presidents, but also the most imperative aspects of their ensuing administrations. Among the contributors to the book, Mark Rozell, also a faculty member of Catholic University's Politics Department, provides an excellent and detailed account of the use of executive privilege by various presidents, particularly Clinton and Nixon. The book concludes quite nicely with a final note by Professor Henderson. In his conclusion, Professor Henderson presents a critical examination of the Clinton presidency, comparing its style and presentation to other similar administrations.

A Must for Any Future Sport Administrator
This book is for anyone who ever wanted the inside information on how some of sports top exuctives got their start. I was delighted to see that all contributors mentioned internships in their personal climb to the top. The book and its contents inspired me to work hard from the bottom of the job totem pole to the top. The book also gave practical information on how to get started and who to talk to. I would recommend this book to anyone graduating from college and those who are already in the field for some insiders advice. A very insightful and interesting book!

The Project Management Scorecard: Measuring the Success of Project Management Solutions
Published in Hardcover by Butterworth-Heinemann (01 May, 2002)
Authors: Jack J. Phillips, Timothy W. Bothell, and G. Lynne Snead
Average review score:

Essential for PMOs and mature project organizations
This book is ROI-focused and integrates the people and process elements of project management with a balanced scorecard approach. One of the authors, Jack J. Phillips, has extensive experience and a large published body of knowledge in the domains of HR, ROI and scorecard development. This book has his touch, and covers the essentials of a mature project organization, what to measure and how to measure it.

The approach is as follows:
1. Measure:
* reaction and satisfaction
* skill and knowledge churn during the project
* implementation and progress metrics throughout the project
2. From the metrics capture:
* business impact data
* ROI
3. Identify both tangible and intangible benefits and apply them to an aggregate 'true cost'.

The book also shows how to translate business metrics to dollar values, build a business case, and communicate status, based on the scorecard, to clients and stakeholders. This is essential for anyone who is setting up or managing a program management office or who wants to improve internal project managment processes. It also provides one of the best methods for communicating status to clients and upper management.
